Making Progress: News for a Change; August 4, 2008

August 4th, 2008

We’ll talk to Jason Hurd of WPVM’s “Veterans Voices”. Jason and other Iraq Veterans Against the War are on the State of the Union Base Tour, currently heading for Fort Bragg. We’ll talk about what he and the other veterans are doing to try to raise awareness among military families.

David will talk about what George Bush and the Republicans (and some Democrats) don’t want to acknowledge: Socialism is alive and well in America - socialism for the wealthy, that is.

We’ll talk to some of the treesitters from the Magnolia slated for destruction if Stewart Coleman is allowed to build his Parkside condominiums.

This local news and public affairs show focuses on underreported information and encourages civic activism. Tune in live 7-8 pm Monday, catch the 1 pm Tuesday rebroadcast, or stream or podcast.

Nighttime Swerve radio presents…

June 5th, 2008

doin it in the park

Permit secured. Bring a friend. Heck, maybe even this guy will be there again.

Earthtone Soundsystem gained notoriety in Atlanta during the mid 90’s for its free outdoor renegade parties in Piedmont Park. Usually on Sunday afternoons, these house music events drew quite a diverse crowd. Since then the Earthtone DJs have spread out across the US, but their mission remains the same. Crank up the sound system and play some dance music for the masses!

Pritchard Park is located right in the heart of downtown Asheville, wedged between Patton Ave and College St.

Check out this link for video of past events > http://www.youtube.com/earthtonesoundsystem

There will be a WPVM / MAIN table at this event to help raise awareness about our organziations! Volunteers are welcome to hang out and talk with the public!

stunt cipher mayhem awarded

May 2nd, 2008

least commercial potential award WPVM spring 2008

I would like to brag today about receiving
the Least Commercial Potential Award for
stunt cipher mayhem during the recent
WPVM Spring 2008 Listener Supported
fund drive.

For those who don’t know, stunt cipher
mayhem
is a radio show which airs every
Sunday from 7-9 PM
on WPVM. As it is
obliquely described in the WPVM archival
list, stunt cipher mayhem seeks to dodge
habitual terms through an exploration of
“Sound poiesis, phonemes, feedback,
electronic or acoustic, broken speaker, bad
ear, static plus, garbage theoretical and,
[...], un sound invert as negative force” and
(ahem) so on.

I should add that stunt cipher mayhem has also featured divers interviews with none other than Charlie Louvin and CA Conrad, among others.

In any case, this is a notable award considering the number of superb shows on WPVM which likewise exhibit scant commercial possibilities; thus, I am especially proud of this trophy.

Many thanks are due to all discerning WPVM volunteers who voted, while particular thanks also go out to Meegan Kelly, Gillian Coats and Lou Anne Jordan for actually organizing this vote and then making all the splendid trophies.

Thanks as well to Rachel Mitchell for providing this photograph of my cherished trophy.

And last but never least, of course, huge thanks to all of those less visible supporters who contributed to WPVM during our onair fund drive. Without you, none of this would be possible.
