doin it in the park

Permit secured. Bring a friend. Heck, maybe even this guy will be there again.

Earthtone Soundsystem gained notoriety in Atlanta during the mid 90’s for its free outdoor renegade parties in Piedmont Park. Usually on Sunday afternoons, these house music events drew quite a diverse crowd. Since then the Earthtone DJs have spread out across the US, but their mission remains the same. Crank up the sound system and play some dance music for the masses!

Pritchard Park is located right in the heart of downtown Asheville, wedged between Patton Ave and College St.

Check out this link for video of past events > http://www.youtube.com/earthtonesoundsystem

There will be a WPVM / MAIN table at this event to help raise awareness about our organziations! Volunteers are welcome to hang out and talk with the public!

Tonight, tomorrow, and Saturday the WordPlay team will be bringing the featured readings of Asheville Wordfest 2008 to the airwaves, live and in real time. Tonight’s reading will feature Patricia Smith, one of the great slam poets of our era, and Rick Chess, head of the writing program at UNCA. It’ll get underway at 7:00 PM. If you can’t be there, in UNCA’s Humanities Lecture Hall, then tune in here.

Tomorrow’s event will feature Simon Ortiz, MariJo Moore, and Kathryn Stripling Byer, North Carolina’s Poet Laureate.

Coming up Saturday: Pulitzer Prize Winner Galway Kinnel, and Katemeh Keshavarz, translator of the Persian mystic poet Rumi.

Both these events will also kick off at 7:00 in the same venue – and right here at WPVM.

The festival offers many more readings, performances, celebrations, and workshops, so do check out the WordFest website. The website will also offer streaming video of the events we broadcast here, so click over if you’d like to see what the characters producing these voices actually look like.

The broadcasts are a joint project of WPVM, MAIN, WordFest Asheville, and, of course, the WordPlay crew.
